AzPA Immunization Training Program is an innovative and interactive educational program that provides pharmacists and student pharmacists with the skills necessary to become primary sources for vaccine advocacy, education, and administration. The two-part program reviews the basics of immunology, identifies legal and regulatory issues pharmacists must consider before starting an immunization program, and focuses on practice implementation. 

The purpose of this educational program is to:

  • Provide comprehensive immunization education and training.
  • Provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to establish and promote a successful immunization service.
  • Teach student pharmacists and pharmacists to identify at-risk patient populations needing immunizations.
  • Teach student pharmacists and pharmacists to administer immunizations in compliance with legal and regulatory standards.

Arizona Pharmacy Association Immunization Training Program is conducted in two parts: the self-study and the live training. A Certificate of Achievement (in PDF format) will be awarded to participants who successfully complete all program components, including a final evaluation form. Electronic Certificates will be issued within 30 days of completion of this certificate training program.

Key Learning Objectives: 


At the completion of this Home Study activity, the participant will be able to:


1. Describe the difference between active and passive immunity


2. Locate resources relevant to current immunization practice.


3. Describe recommended vaccine storage and handling guidelines


4. Describe the general categories of vaccine adverse reactions


5. Describe the recommended vaccine administration techniques (SC, IM, ID, IN, Oral)


6. For the diseases diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, hib, pneumococcal, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, zoster, hepatitis A & B, influenza, meningococcal, HPV, polio and rotavirus:


     a. Describe the disease, including the causative agent

     b. Describe the characteristics of the available vaccine preparations

     c.  Identify the groups at highest risk for each disease

     d.  Identify those for whom routine immunization is recommended

     e.  Identify those for whom routine immunization is contraindicated

     f.   Describe considerations for the timing and spacing of vaccine doses



At the completion of this Live Seminar activity, the participant will be able to:


1. Evaluate a patient’s medical and immunization history to determine if the patient falls into the target groups for each vaccine based on the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations using the appropriate CDC immunization schedule


2. For dealing with responding to adverse reactions to vaccination

       a.    Describe the difference between localized, systemic, and allergic reaction

       b.    List the signs and symptoms of an localized, systemic, and allergic reaction

       c.    Describe the steps necessary to respond to a patient experiencing syncope

       d.    Describe the steps necessary to respond to a patient experiencing a systemic reaction

       e.    Describe the steps necessary to respond to an allergic anaphylactic reaction

       f.     Demonstrate the proper use of an Epi-Pen


3. Demonstrate proper intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques


4. Describe proper intradermal, intranasal and oral vaccine administration methods

5. List the federal and state specific laws pertaining to vaccine administration


Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Information and Activity Completion Requirements:

Initial release date: 01/23/2016; expiration date:  01/23/2019

Activity Type:  Practice-based

Target Audience:  Pharmacists in all practice settings 

  • Successful completion of the self-study component involves completing all 15 videos and receive a 70% or better on the self-study exam. 
  • Successful completion of the live seminar component involves attending the full live seminar, passing the final assessment with a grade of 70% or higher and completing a skills assessment. In addition completing a final program evaluation.
  • Successful completion of the entire program will result in 23 contact hours of CPE credit (2.30 CEU).    ACPE Universal Activity Number: 0100-0000-15-090-B01-P 


Activity Completion Requirements:

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded to participants who successfully complete all activity requirements, which include the self-study activity, the self-study assessment, the live training seminar, and the final assessment. Successful completion is defined as completing the self-study assessment score of 70% or higher, attendance at the live seminar, a final assessment score of 70%, and completion of the activity evaluation. Certificate of Achievements will be emailed to the email address you indicate on the registration form. This CPE recording will also be uploaded onto the NABP CPE Monitor e-Profile system within 60 days of completion of the final evaluation form.  Immunization Training Program was developed by AzPA for pharmacists and pharmacy students.The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Arizona Pharmacy Association are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as providers of continuing education.

Refund Policy: 
Refund and/or cancellation requests must be made in writing to the Arizona Pharmacy Association office. A cancellation request made at least two weeks prior to the scheduled program will require $100.00 fee (cancellation fee plus the cost of printed materials). A cancellation request made 10 business days or less prior to the schedule program will require a $150 fee (cancellation plus printed materials, plus cost of food order). You must submit a written request to cancel by email, fax or standard mail. No refunds will be issued for cancellation requests received after the posted start date / time of the scheduled program. AzPA reserves the right to cancel any activity due to insufficient pre-registration and as determined by the Executive Director or CE Administrator. In this case, all individuals pre-registered are notified and issued a full refund. Registration fees can not be re-allocated to future offerings of this certification program due to the multiple steps involved with processing CE credits.
